Leeds Champions of the World

Leeds Rhinos were tonight crowned the best Rugby League club on the planet in atrocious conditions at Elland Road versus the Melbourne Storm. A brutal, attritional game saw the Loiners win 11-4 in front of a crowd of 33,204, a record attendance at the home of Leeds United this season.

Ryan Hoffman's try for the Storm gave the Aussies the 4-2 lead in the first half. However the depleted visitors were stunned minutes before half time when Scott Donald finished a well-worked try for the Super League champions. This followed Danny McGuire's enforced absence with a shoulder injury after a awful off-the-ball challenge.

The second half saw both teams grind out an enthralling defensive battle. The Rhinos more than matched the NRL premiers and Kevin Sinfield helped himself to a penalty midway through the half. With just over ten minutes to go Leeds' captain Sinfield slotted over a drop goal to give the Rhinos a second Carnegie World Club Challenge victory in the three seasons.

Saints Era of Dominance Over?

St.Helens defeat to Hull KR was not entirely unexpected. Hull KR bought big over the winter break bringing stars like Chev Walker and Jake Webster while Challenge Cup winners St.Helens witnessed no new arrivals. I feel Saints never adequately replaced their two talismans of 2006, Paul Anderson and Jamie Lyon.

Matt Gidley is no substitute for the guile and talent of Lyon while the Saints pack have relied on youngsters such as James Graham to make the step up. With ageing stars like Long, Cunningham, Talau, Gidley and Fozzard nearing the end of their careers the era of St.Helens winning everything in sight is long gone. The regular absences of captain Paul Sculthorpe through injury begs the question of whether giving him a
new contract was a good idea.

I'm not suggesting that Saints are about to become relegation fodder but I think the balance of power may move towards Leeds, Wigan, Warrington and Hull FC in the near future. Saints and Bradford (to an extent) are suffering from playing in dilapidated stadiums that are draining money away in upkeep costs. This is to the detriment of investing in the playing squad and this especially affects the Saints as they struggle to attract crowds comparable to the standard of the teams they put out.

It is great to see Gareth Ellis make a huge decision and sign for the Wests Tigers in the NRL. He is leaving at his peak and hopefully will make a huge impression like Adrian Morley did at the Sydney Roosters. It would be even better if he leaves Su
per League with a World Cup winners medal too.
___________________________________________________________________

The implosion of the
New Zealand team finally seems to be over as the new coaching dream team of Wayne Bennett and Stephen Kearney take over. Bennett was initially assumed to be taking over as head coach but he will act in an advisory role for the Kiwis and Kearney is the newly appointed coach.

Gary Kemble's reign lasted just five months including a hammering by the Aussies and a whitewash test series against the GB Lions. A revolt by the players led by barnstorming captain Roy Asotasi led to Kemble's departure as it was clear he had "lost" the dressing room. It could be an ominous sign that a resurgent Kiwi side wil
l be back for the World Cup.
___________________________________________________________________

Another ridiculous decision has been allowed by the RLIF (Rugby League International Federation). Motu Tony has opted to play for Samoa in this year's World Cup. He played for New Zealand a couple of years ago and now has chosen to play for the country of his birth. He is quoted:

"This is the first fully-fledged Samoan team that has been around since I started playing professionally and I wanted to put my name forward."
Absolute garbage, to be fair. Although it is good to see quality players starring for the smaller nations the RLIF cannot allow the situation to persist where players can pick and choose which country they play for every couple of years. It is time that the RLIF enforce a system where you choose one nation to represent and that is it. Simple. Maybe in other sports, but not Rugby League, obviously.

On a more positive note the Samoa side for the World Cup could look pretty tasty. Ex-Kiwis Nigel Vagana, Motu Tony, Willie Talai, Ali Lauiti'iti, Tony Puletua will combine with plenty of NRL/ SL stars such as David Solomona, Francis Meli, George Carmont, Ia'feta Palaa'aesina, Kylie Leuluai and Matt Utai. They are in a World
Cup group with Ireland and Tonga.
___________________________________________________________________

It's been an interesting first week in the Tipping League as John Bassinder takes an early lead on ten points. Champion Russell Gough begins slowly with only four points on the opening weekend.

Pro Season Kicks Off

Super League XIII kicks off this evening with a clash between champions Leeds Rhinos and last season's surprise package Hull Kingston Rovers. This game has been brought forward due to Leeds' participation in the World Club Challenge at the end of the month and thus is not part of the Tipping League.

This will be an interesting test for both sides. Leeds have not signed any players in the off season and remain reliant on the championship winning side. Hull KR have spent big and have high hopes of making the top six. Chev Walker is the most high-profile signing and the ex Leeds centre will be determined to show his old club that his massive potential is being fulfilled. Big games from Jake Webster and Ben Galea will be required if the East Hull side are to topple the Rhinos in front what is hoped to be a crowd of 20,000.

Last night saw the start of the Northern Rail League Cup. Celtic Crusaders beat Sheffield Eagles at the Don Valley to begin their huge campaign for Super League acceptance this year.

Sheffield Eagles 12-22 Celtic Crusaders

I'm still accepting entries for next week's start so invite your friends, relatives and random hobos from the street. We have already beaten last season's number of participants and it would be great if we could hit 25 entrants this year.
